Well. Steve's dad was here. And it wasn't weird at all.

And Danny wasn't at all both saddened and relieved to not have Matty or Grace or even Meka show up for him. Not at all. Don't be silly.

He was just gonna do the sane thing and sublimate his feelings by making breakfast for Steve and his guest until things went back to normal. Which would hopefully happen tomorrow. But, for now, there would be pancakes. With bananas and chocolate chips to make Steve smile like a goofball.

Steve returned from his morning run and swim and did light up like a Christmas tree to see the pancakes. "Oooh."

"Don't get too excited about it, you're sharing 'em," Danny said, but he was smiling as he said it. So it was clearly meant for Steve.

"Makes up for sleeping on the sofa," Steve teased softly.

He'd made his dad take his room, then weenied out and crashed on the sofa.

"You coulda slept out on the lanai," he replied dryly. "How're you holding up?"

"It's just a weekend or something, right?" Steve asked.

So...not great.

"Babe." C'mon now. You had to know he wouldn't just let this one go.

Steve met his eyes for just a second to show the mix of emotions he was feeling. "Not now, Danno," he said softly, reaching out and giving Danny's hand a squeeze. "After."

Danny let out a sigh, squeezing back to let Steve know he was still there for him. Even if things were getting weird here.

Which, of course, meant now was the time for John to come into the kitchen for breakfast. "Boys," he said with a too sharp look to not miss on details even if hands were snatched away quickly.

"I haven't been a boy since Annapolis, Dad," Steve replied, moving over to pour two cups of coffee.

"John," Danny said with a polite nod. "Pancakes?"

"Pancakes would be very nice," John said with a slightly strained smile that was aimed at both of them. "I was always better at the grill than in the kitchen."

"Danny makes the best pancakes," Steve said.

Was that weird to say? They were roommates. Too. Also.

"Got lots of practice," Danny agreed, picking up his own coffee so he could get a sip in before getting to work. "My daughter's favorite."

"You have kids?" He didn't see any sign of them in the apartment, at least.

Also a sign that... well. Just a sign for other things going on here.

"Grace is back in Honolulu with her mother," Steve said. "She and Danny split custody."

[hatesparadise]

"She's twelve now," Danny said, stirring up batter. "Twelve, going on eighteen."

Which wasn't too far off from the age Mary was when everything happened.

Which was why John smiled,without it reaching his eyes and nodded. "It's good that you're involved with her. Steve too...?"

"Now and then," Steve said. "She likes our beach."

[hatesparadise]

"The whole team is great with her," Danny said, watching them both out of the corner of his eye. "She adopted that whole Hawaiian auntie/uncle thing right away."

"Ohana," John corrected for Steve, taking his coffee gladly. Anything to distract himself. "It was always a good beach for kids."

Steve smiled. "Good waves for beginners' surfing, too."

"Ah, that's for Kono to teach her," Danny said before Steve could get his hopes up.

John sipped his coffee, looking from his son to this man and back again. "Steve was always very good in the water with his sister."

"And that was before I could hold my breath for more than three minutes," Steve said, stealing a pancake right off the griddle.
