Danny woke up to a cat sprawled out on his chest, purring away. This might not have been too strange if he hadn't known for a fact that it sure as hell hadn't been there before. Also, because it immediately yawned and said, "You need coffee to deal with this."

Which was A Thing.

That was why he was now in the kitchen, waiting for the coffee to brew and staring down a talking cat.

Steve came in from a very brisk swim in the waters around Fandom, an otter trailing after him.

"Danny? Something weird is happening again."

The cat hopped off the counter top to immediately pad on over to that otter to delicately sniff at them for a moment or two before purring and rubbing her cheek against them.

"You think?" Danny asked dryly, watching that entire display happen.

"This is, apparently, Kailani," Steve said. "She thinks we should be back in the water already."

"I'm Jo," the cat said, pushing at the otter to lay down so she could be groomed properly.

"That's Jo," Danny sighed like it pained him.

"You need more coffee," Steve and Kailani said at the same time, Kailani flopping over to be groomed.

"He does," Jo agreed, curling up to cuddle with Kailani once she was appropriately groomed.

Danny sighed at them all. "What is even happening here?"

"No idea," Steve admitted, "but Kailani is awesome."

"Of course I am," she said, closing her eyes to bask in the sunlight.

Jo purred louder in agreement.

"Right," Danny replied, grabbing a cup of coffee once it was done. "Maybe I need to put some booze in this."

"It's, like, 8 o'clock in the morning," Steve said judgmentally. "Wait until lunch."

Danny just gestured to the little animal pile where the cat was curled up on the otter's stomach, purring up a storm.

"You wanna try that again?"

"It's just a talking cat, Danny," Steve said.

"Daemon," Jo corrected, not bothering to open her eyes.

"That means nothing to us," Danny replied. Then turned to give Steve the stink-eye. "Does that mean something to you? Is this some Hawaiian thing?"

"It's not a Hawaiian thing," Steve said. "I could ask Jerry?"

Kailani snorted. "That sounds like a terrible idea. Can we go swimming again?"

"It's too cold," Jo whined pitifully. She was really playing it up, though.

Danny sighed like he'd been hoping it was just that easy. "I need food before I figure any of this out."

"Eggs?" Steve suggested, already heading for the kitchen.

[hatesparadise]

"Please," Danny said, perking up a little and nearly tripping over the animal puddle to follow him.

"There's no poke?" Kailani asked.

"I think the best we have for seafood is lox," Steve admitted.

[hatesparadise]

"You'll like it," Jo promised, scrambling to her feet to trot ahead of Kailani. "It's cured."

Danny tilted his head like that was that cat said the most him thing possible there.

"Well, if you like it," Kailani said, waddling over the floor in a seriously ungraceful way, "I'll give it a try."

Jo's body language went even happier at that and her trot turned into a pleased little strut.

"She's much more agreeable than you," Danny remarked dryly.

"Prettier, too," Steve said, who'd immediately taken to Kailani like some kind of weird, furry child.

Danny snorted at that, but didn't disagree. "It's weird, though. Right?"

"Little weird," Steve admitted, "but not in a bad way."

[hatesparadise]

Danny watched as the cat and seal worked together to get the fridge open for that lox. "Agree to disagree."

"He's being ridiculous again," Jo informed Kailani.

[grenadesandohana]

"Well, yes, but it's strangely endearing," Kailani said. "We're in trouble when he's not complaining."
