Well, it was Father's Day. And that might have been a kind of normal occurrence for Danny, but Steve... it was a little more fraught. What with the McGarrett tendency to just jam down all the emotions and soldier through things.

But this year was ending up a little different with a hand drawn card from Charlie and a mug from Grace had Steve's name on them along with the usual gifts for Danny. Which was why Danny was letting the kids have fun on the beach and checking on Steve where he'd disappeared to get the grilling stuff together for way too long.

"Babe?"

Steve was standing by the sink, holding the mug Grace had given him entirely too tightly and fighting back tears. "I'm good," he promised.

"You sure?" Danny asked, coming up to hug him from behind. Yes, it looked a little ridiculous with the eight difference. But he was doin' it anyway.

"I didn't expect to get anything today," Steve said quietly.

"And now?" Danny asked, giving his waist a little squeeze.

[grenadesandohana]

"And now I don't know what to do with this," Steve whispered.

[hatesparadise]

"Do you want me to tell 'em to dial it back?" Grace could get it, but Charlie...

"Not at all," Steve said quickly. "I don't want them to think I'm ungrateful. I'm just not used to it."

Danny stepped back to turn Steve around for that. "You needed a moment to gather your thoughts."

"Maybe two moments," Steve agreed.

Danny tugged him down for a kiss for that. Because Steve needed it.

Steve slid his arms around Danny, pulling him in closer. He needed this.

"All good, babe," Danny murmured. "All good. Kids are happy, we're here."

Steve was just going to need a little bit of time to process all of this. Emotions were hard. "Hard to go wrong with grilling dinner and swimming at the beach," he said a little inanely.

Danny kissed him again for that. "Wanna circle back to this once they go to bed?"

And pretend everything is okay for now. Because Steve.

"We could never circle back?" Steve countered with a tiny smile.

[hatesparadise]

"Good luck there," Danny replied dryly, cupping Steve's cheek in his hand.

Steve tilted his head to kiss Danny's palm. "It was worth a try?"

"Ehhh," Danny said, wrinkling his nose. "The attempt was made."

"Tough crowd," Steve teased softly.

Danny gave him an amused look for that, running his thump along Steve's cheekbone. "Important thing. My kids. You."

Steve smiled and leaned in for a kiss. "Love you, Danno."

Danny kissed him back one more time after that. "Get some food on the grill. You'll feel better having something to focus on."

Because Steve. And Danny knew him too well.

There was something freeing in being so well known, though. "Burgers, dogs, and steaks," Steve said. "Grace isn't doing a weird vegan thing, right?"

[hatesparadise]

"No, thank god," Danny replied with sigh that said it had been discussed. "But Charlie is on this weird thing about cheese being gross."

His favorite food the last time they saw him had been grilled cheese, mind you.

Steve blinked. "But he was made out of macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches a month ago."
