Well. Steve's dad was here. And it wasn't weird at all.

And Danny wasn't at all both saddened and relieved to not have Matty or Grace or even Meka show up for him. Not at all. Don't be silly.

He was just gonna do the sane thing and sublimate his feelings by making breakfast for Steve and his guest until things went back to normal. Which would hopefully happen tomorrow. But, for now, there would be pancakes. With bananas and chocolate chips to make Steve smile like a goofball.

"We've been partners almost four years," Steve said, missing the point again.

"Steve, I know I'm from an older generation, but I'm not blind." Though he was very glad to have a room on the other side of the apartment now.

Steve blinked, then his jaw firmed. "Blind to what?"

"Steve," Danny, who would have very much liked to have a nice, friendly breakfast here, warned quietly.

Because he knew that jaw clench.

"Your relationship," John said. Because why say things in a way that wasn't avoiding the topic at hand? "I mean. It's called that, right?"

"Depends on what the next words out of your mouth sound like," Steve said a little icily.

Danny sighed and pushed his plate away because this was just going to be a thing. And he didn't want to clean up blood in his kitchen if people decided to throw punches.

"I'm trying here," John insisted. You know. In that McGarrett way that involved repressing his emotions and not getting to the root of anything at all. Ever. "I just didn't realize it was like that."

Ah, the careful phrasing of a man of a certain generation.

"Well, Dad, you've been dead, so I'm not sure when I was supposed to loop you in."

"I'm trying to be involved while I can here," John said, also raising his voice to match Steve's. Because that's just how to show you support your newly gay son.

Also totally how sexuality worked!

"You've picked an absolutely useless time to start," Steve snapped.

[hawaii_5ohana]

"How is it useless to want to know what my son is doing?" John demanded.

[grenadesandohana]

"I have been chasing your approval my entire life," Steve said, "but you know what? You don't get to judge this part. I don't need to know what you think about me and Danny."

They were both just ignoring how Danny was staring up at the ceiling like he was asking for divine strength here.

"I'm not trying to judge you! I just asked a question!"

In a vaguely judgmental way.

"Is this--is this one of the reasons you didn't come home?"

[grenadesandohana]

"No," Steve said. "I didn't come home because Annapolis is 5000 miles away from Honolulu and after you sent us away I took the hint and stayed gone."

John's expression dropped at that and the fight went out of him. "Steve..."

"Okay, okay, go to your corners here," Danny said, putting a hand on Steve's arm.

Every muscle in Steve's arm had clenched up. "I want to eat my pancakes," Steve muttered.

"It's a metaphor," Danny replied, ignoring John for a moment in the hopes of relaxing Steve just a little. He was doing the 'I want to punch someone' hand clench.

Steve grunted and stuffed pancakes into mouth, still glaring at his father.

"Now, your father and I are going to go have a chat on the lanai," Danny said. Because that was just a thing that was going to happen.

Yeah, maybe excuse John for looking a little alarmed over potentially getting a shakedown from this short, New Jersey stereotype that was apparently dating (?) his son.

Steve nodded, shoulders creeping up towards his ears.

There would be no pancakes left on his plate when you got back, Danny.

Danny politely gestured for John to join him for what was going to be a very loud, very pointed lecture out on the lanai. Complete with hand gestures and not so vague threats issued to a dead man.

Was it weird to feel kind of warm and taken care of while watching someone else rip your dad a new one? Steve decided not to overthink it as he finished his pancakes and then two of Danny's.
