Danny woke up to a cat sprawled out on his chest, purring away. This might not have been too strange if he hadn't known for a fact that it sure as hell hadn't been there before. Also, because it immediately yawned and said, "You need coffee to deal with this."

Which was A Thing.

That was why he was now in the kitchen, waiting for the coffee to brew and staring down a talking cat.

"He hasn't decided?" Steve repeated.

"We try loads of things before we decide what we want to be," Jo said like that much should be obvious.

"Your Batman phase was...interesting," Kailani said delicately.

Jo giggled, ruining Danny's delighted expression with, "I was a bulldog whenever we went to school."

"Were you?" Steve said, grinning huge.

"What were you in this Batman phase?" Danny asked, crossing his arms over his chest defensively.

"A robin," Kailani said dryly. "I had to be the sidekick."

"That's adorable," Danny said, smirking at Steve.

Steve made a face at him. "I was probably eight or something."

"Doesn't make it any less adorable."

[grenadesandohana]

"I'm not adorable, I'm a SEAL."

[hatesparadise]

"An adorable SEAL," Danny said reaching up to pinch his cheek. Yes, knowing full well, that wouldn't fly with Steve.

Steve growled at him but Kailana had flopped over and showed her belly to Jo, so clearly he didn't really care. "Not adorable. I'm a badass."

Jo pounced with all viciousness to purr and roll on Kailani as much as possible. Because some people wouldn't do it for themselves.

"You know, your sister offered to dig up family photos of you," Danny said, pleased that Steve was kinda playing along with it.

Steve's eyes went huge. "She didn't!"

Danny just continued to grin. "What can I say? Mary likes me."

"Mary likes everyone," Steve said.

That was not true at all.

"Mary does not," Danny said, kindly keeping the Catherine talk to himself, though. Because, well, it wasn't his place on a lot of levels.

"Huh," Steve said. "I thought Mary liked everyone."

Steve: not noted for his amazing family-reading skills.

Which was why Danny gave him A Look for that. Because bless his heart.

Steve smiled. "I missed something?"

Well, Doris, for instance.

"Tiny bit," he replied with a wry smile. "Siblings do that, though."

Like Matty had.

Steve was thinking of Matty, too, but wouldn't bring it up.

"So how does this...animal thing...work in a family full of kids?" he asked Jo. "It is really loud?"

Jo made a sort of approximation of a frown at that. "Louder than it was with Rachel and Harlan. Even after Grace and Emiel were born. We thought maybe it was a British thing?"

"It might be," Steve said. "Danny and I aren't the experts on this at all."
