It was hot out. And it wasn't the Hawaii hot, it was the kind of hot that Danny had definitely willfully forgotten about back in New Jersey.

Which was why he was more than willing to let Steve talk him into traveling way too far to get ice cream on the mainland as a sort of date night. While trying desperately to not melt the entire time.

"I can't believe I'm saying that I miss the summer in Hawaii," he grumbled as they got to the shop.

"Professionally," Danny filled in as they assembled group turned to look at them for it.

"Of course professionally," Steve said. "Not 'yay dead bodies.' That would be strange."

[hatesparadise]

"The detectives will want to interview you two," their beat cop friend said, looking a little squeamish.

[grenadesandohana]

"They generally do," Steve admitted.

[hatesparadise]

"He'll behave," Danny promised. And by 'behave' he meant they'd end up borderline stealing the investigation.

[grenadesandohana]

"Define behave," Steve said.

[hatesparadise]

"Steven."

Oh, they were stealing this case. But they couldn't just say it.

Steve smiled at him. "Oh, like that. All right."

[hatesparadise]

"So, we'll find the detectives outside?" Danny suggested, already heading for the door. Because no one could do bossy professional courtesy like Daniel Williams.

Steve followed in Danny's wake, an expert on ignoring befuddled looks of law enforcement.

"They following us?" Danny asked, not looking back as he instead looked around for wherever the security cameras in this place were feeding back to.

"Nope," Steve said with a little snicker. "Don't want the work."

[hatesparadise]

"It's a nice area, maybe they don't get many of these." Unlike the episodic nature of all their cases.

It was so weird that Hawai'i was still a tourist haven in their universe, truly.

"I mean, this isn't anything compared to Halloween," Steve said with a little teasing smile.

[hatesparadise]

"We're supposed to take the kids trick or treating this year," Danny said, oblivious to how that would mean they'd for sure get a case then.

Also, casual 'we' there.

Steve's face did that goofy, pleased thing that it did when he was just casually included in Danny's family life.

"Is Charlie gonna be a Navy SEAL?"

Probably not, Steve, no.

"Oh, he has changed the idea about ten times, so let's see what he settles on closer to then," Danny replied, opening a door to find the back room for the place.

"He'd be great as a SEAL," Steve declared, glancing around the room. "Blood over there behind that chair," he said, pointing.

"Yes, there is," Danny said, cocking his head to the side. "Did you bring gloves?"

THAT WAS A WEIRD QUESTION WITH ANYONE ELSE.

"Of course I brought gloves," Steve said. "You yelled about it on the boat that time and I pack them ever since."

"It's just smart!" Danny insisted. "You have all the pockets."

[grenadesandohana]

"But then there's less room for grenades," Steve lamented entirely to wind Danny up.

[hatesparadise]

"Do not!"

[grenadesandohana]

"But they're so handy!"

[hatesparadise]

"Not nearly as much as you seem to think!" Danny insisted.
