So, you could make all the plans you wanted, but the island--no, not the one in the Pacific--would do whatever the hell it wanted. But in this once instance, it all worked out. Probably because there were other people involved.

Which didn't annoy Danny at all.

No, don't be silly. He was just glad to be home--don't anyone tell Steve that he called it that--and able to see his daughter again.

Diego was wearing the same thing he had worn to the pool party. He also wasn’t wearing sunscreen because it just wasn’t something he thought about.

“Are you trying to make your friends jealous with those photos?”

"Summer started it," Annie told him with a smile, holding out her phone to show him the selfie of Summer and Rey that had been sent to her. "I think it's, like, mutually assured jealousy."

Japan looked pretty sweet, even if Annie was already having, like, the greatest time in Hawaii, confusion about people's homes aside.

He chuckled, leaning back on his elbows. “I don’t think Five and I will be doing the same thing.”

"He better be taking care of that plant." Or else. "Are you good on sunblock? I can get your back, if you want."

You know what Annie loved? A totally innocent excuse to rub down her boyfriend in public, that's what. Kindly ignore the fact that she had brought the spray kind, okay.

"I mean, I'm not wearing any," he said. "But if you want to rub my back then I'm all for it."

"Diego, you don't want to get burned," Annie said admonishingly, pulling out the sunscreen and scooting over. "Like, seriously, that would be miserable. We're much closer to the equator here."

Diego sighed. "Oh fine. Lotion me up."

"So put upon," Annie teased, squirting some lotion into her palm and throwing the bottle vaguely towards Diego's feet as she moved behind him. "Oh, no, having to sit still and let me put lotion on you so you don't get all sunburned, so sad."

"Okay, maybe it's not that much of a sacrifice for me," he said with a smile. "Hey--what's up with Danny and Steve living separately?"

Because he saw she was just as surprised as he was when they found out.

"I don't know," Annie replied in a slightly hushed tone as she started rubbing sunscreen on his back, because what was up with that. "Like, I can't picture either of them living on their own." Steve probably only ate MREs when left to his own devices!

Steve probably ate what Diego and Annie ate when left to their own devices. A lot of protein shakes.

"It's so weird," Diego said. "I thought they'd be, like, next door neighbors at the least."

"But did you catch that Danny has a candy stash at Steve's place?" Annie noted, sneaking a light kiss by his ear. "So, like, they're still them about it."

And honestly Annie thought it was a pretty good idea. She was going to have to find somewhere to store emergency Almond Joys at Diego's place, obviously.

As if Diego would have that abomination of a candy in his home!

He would change his mind about it after the Black Noir thing.

"Best part about staying at Danny's? He kind of has to feed us."

"He's obligated," Annie agreed, gently rubbing a little sunscreen into his neck and carefully getting his ears, like someone who cared about your skin for you, Diego, before shifting around to sit back on her towel. "Do you think they flipped a coin or whatever, or that Danny chose us 'cause you're his favorite?"

Favorite.

"More like you're his favorite," Diego said, turning to lay on his stomach now that his back was all protected. "I'm just benefitting from it."

"I don't know, I've never decorated his desk for him," Annie pointed out, smiling as she put her gigantic hat back on. "Or helped with desk security."

She was awfully good at spin, though.

"Is that what we're calling it?" he asked. "I think he would disagree."

"Probably, but I'm a lot more positive than either of you," Annie decided, stretching out on her stomach beside him and angling out her phone in a way that was probably pretty familiar. "Say 'Aloha.'"

Or, like, don't, but she would at least insist on a smile.

He did not, but he did at least smile for the selfie. "You sure your phone has enough space for all these pictures you're going to take?"

"I'll delete some apps if I have to, but also there's the cloud," Annie told him helpfully, setting her phone down and moving her hat out of the way so she could lean over for a kiss. "I just want to remember everything."

"This is nice. I never really got the whole vacation thing before--" Namely because it had been instilled in him to work constantly since birth. "--but I like this."

"Thought you might. And this is just the first day," Annie pointed out, sighing happily as she rested her cheek on her crossed arms. "We're not going to want to go home."

Home, where it was probably currently snowing or raining or a terrible combination of the two.

"I wouldn't go that far," Diego said. "I would miss my bed eventually."

"I like your bed, but I don't know if I like it more than Hawaii," Annie teased. "There are other beds. Hawaiian beds."

"Yeah, well, currently the Hawaiian bed we do have is going to be in Danny's house." Which was just so weird to him. "So that automatically makes my bed better."
