So, you could make all the plans you wanted, but the island--no, not the one in the Pacific--would do whatever the hell it wanted. But in this once instance, it all worked out. Probably because there were other people involved.

Which didn't annoy Danny at all.

No, don't be silly. He was just glad to be home--don't anyone tell Steve that he called it that--and able to see his daughter again.

Ah yes, an entire event mostly centered around roasting meat!

This was fine.

Liam was determined to make it be fine.

At least there was a veggie stir fry, and he wasn’t expected to subsist entirely on poi and salad?

Though yeah, he was going to slip away to a corner furthest from the buffet table a time or two throughout the night to just... quietly get his shit together. Don’t mind him.

Steve wasn't the head of the governor's super elite shiny task force for not having connections everywhere. A quick word with the head waiter and they came out with a plate full of ridiculously fresh local fruits and veggies, carved up to look like flowers because the Hilton was extra in every way. "Veggie sushi's on the way, too," Steve said with a quick smile.

Okay, the quiet thoughtfulness of that act was- not unexpected, exactly, Liam knew enough about Steve to know the man had Depths. He knew if he'd asked Steve to make sure that there were vegetarian options, he would have.

But he hadn't asked, and yet.

"Thanks, man," Liam said, holding up his mocktail in a salute towards Steve.

"I'm an absolute tyrant when I'm cranky, it's true," Liam said with a snort. Leaving aside the fact that Liam was barely 'the boss'. Steve certainly outranked him around these parts, that was for sure.

"And when our apartment building burns down as a result, Verity and I are going to move in with you and Danny," Liam threatened. "I can't speak for Diego, he'll probably end up at Annie's."

"I think Ignis's birthday party the other weekend might've finally shaken a few things loose," Liam shared. "Hard to deny magic exists when you've got something like that right under your nose."

"Danny and I missed it," Steve said. "We went hiking and then there was a robber and Danny demanded dinner for having to deal with it."

"I'm saving you from Max," Danny said, taking a seat next to him before it could be grabbed by the man in question. "You don't know it, but you're very thankful."

Because Max's idea of good social skills sometimes involved talking about how to dissect an eyeball.

He could also tell you all about the process of purification.

Liam had been born knowing all sorts of things, but how to effectively make use of a brain-to-mouth filter had not been one of them.

Well, no. But that was because Halloween was one of those for-other-people things Liam hadn't let himself enjoy.

"I had a- I guess you could call it a sheltered upbringing." Liam smiled a little at that. Bit of a private joke, seeing as how he'd 'grown up' in a secret underground hideout underneath a church. "Didn't really see much of people until I got my job as a Companion-Protector." Which had been mere hours after that sheltered upbringing but... details.
